Music at Bushmead Primary School

At Bushmead, children will have the opportunity to explore, create, perform and appreciate music in a variety of fun and exciting ways.  Our music curriculum is delivered by The Luton Music Service, who provide weekly music lessons for our children which incrementally build the knowledge they need to become musicians and to have an appreciation for music.

In Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, children explore Musical Awakenings through singing and percussion where they are introduced to the interrelated dimensions music including pitch, dynamics, pulse, tempo and rhythm.
In Key Stage 2, children will learn to play the ukulele, pocket trumpet, djembe, boomwhackers and percussion during their weekly music lesson. They begin in Year 3 by having an introduction to each of the instruments available, learning a different one each term. In years 4, 5 and 6 children will return to each instrument in turn and
spend a whole year learning how to progress on the instrument in much more depth and with more technique. Whilst learning their instruments, the children will learn different styles of music, musical genres, notation, ensemble skills, listening, composing and performing as well as incrementally building their musical knowledge,
understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music and the history of music.

In Key Stage 2, the children have the opportunity to join the school choir and Luton Music Service offer small group lessons to learn a variety of different instruments and singing. Throughout the year there are lots of opportunities for all children to perform including year group productions, choir trips and our annual Proms concert.
