Geography
At Bushmead, Geography is taught by following the outcomes specified in the National Curriculum. The study of Geography at Bushmead allows children to explore their fascination with the world and nurture their curiosity, by providing them with opportunities to ask questions - and answer them - by travelling on their own journey around the world both inside and outside the classroom.
Our framework has been carefully designed to allow children to leave primary school with an understanding of each of the continents, which is studied in each year group with a focus on a particular area, while focusing on the locational and place knowledge as well as learning about the human and physical geography. Children are also provided with many opportunities to use maps, including world maps, digital maps and maps of the local area.
In Key Stage 1, children are taught geographical vocabulary, the seasons and daily weather patterns, and the four countries of the British Isles. They begin to develop their skills for using atlases with a focus on London and progress to learning about the continents and oceans, paying particular attention to Oceania.
As children progress in Key Stage 2, they cover a range of topics, where they learn about each of the continents while focusing on environmental regions, key physical and human characteristics, countries and cities. They also conduct local studies based on Luton and the airport through fieldwork, using physical and digital mapping tools.
